Modern Standard Arabic Intermediate Mini-Lesson: Life’s Milestones

Learn essential Modern Standard Arabic vocabulary for talking about life’s major milestones, from engagement and marriage to divorce and widowhood.

This lesson is based on Modern Standard Arabic Vocabulary, a comprehensive reference that organizes practical words and phrases into 56 thematic sections to foster mental connections and assist in retention. As noted in the book’s introduction, building a large store of words is the key to effective communication, as even perfect grammar cannot save a speaker who lacks the right nouns.

Please note: While the book primarily presents lists of vocabulary in isolation arranged in parallel columns for self-testing, we are making up original example sentences for this mini-lesson to demonstrate how to use these terms in context; these specific sentences are not found in the book.

The Focus Sentence

يُعْتَبَرُ الزَّواجُ التَّقْليدِيُّ جُزْءًا هَامًّا مِنَ الثَّقافَةِ في بَعْضِ المُجْتَمَعاتِ العَرَبِيَّةِ.

Arranged marriage is considered an important part of the culture in some Arab societies.

The Breakdown

  • يُعْتَبَرُ: “Is considered.” This passive verb is used frequently in formal MSA to introduce classifications or widely held views.
  • الزَّواجُ التَّقْليدِيُّ: “Arranged marriage.” This term appears in Section 3, referring literally to “traditional marriage.”
  • جُزْءًا: “A part.” This word is in the accusative case (manṣūb) because it functions as the second object of the verb “to consider.”
  • الثَّقافَةِ: “Culture.” This noun is found in Section 39.
  • المُجْتَمَعاتِ: “Societies.” This is the plural form of mujtama3, found in Section 25.

Final Tip: Gender and Plurals in Human Nouns

The source follows a simplicity rule: for nouns denoting humans, only the masculine version is usually listed if the feminine is easily formed by adding a ـة (ta marbuta). For example, مُطَلَّقٌ (muṭallaqun) becomes مُطَلَّقَةٌ (muṭallaqatun).

However, always check for irregular (broken) plurals listed in parentheses. For instance, both أَرْمَل (widower) and أَرْمَلَة (widow) share the same plural form: أَرامِلُ (ʔarāmilu). Memorizing these shared plurals is an essential shortcut for intermediate learners reading social or legal reports.
