Russian Intermediate Mini-Lesson: Explaining Reasons with “из-за”

The Breakdown

• не смог привле́чь (ne smog privlech): “Failed to attract.” This combines the negative particle ne with the past tense of “to be able” (moch) and the infinitive “to attract.”
• внима́ние зри́телей (vnimaniye zriteley): “The attention of viewers.” A standard media collocation. Note that zriteley is in the genitive plural.
• из-за́ (iz-za): “Because of” or “Due to.” This is our target structure. It is almost always used to describe a negative or neutral cause that led to a specific result.

Final Tip: Mastering “Because of” (из-за)

The preposition из-за is a vital “bridge” in Russian media. It always requires the Genitive Case. While English often uses “because of” for both good and bad reasons, Russian typically reserves из-за for reasons that are problematic, restrictive, or unintended. (If you want to say “thanks to” for a positive reason, you would use blagodarya).
